Dua Lipa’s upcoming album is a testament to patience, passion, and relentless creativity. The British-Albanian pop star, known for her chart-topping hits, revealed that she wrote a staggering 97 songs for the project—each carefully documented in a personal notebook.
Lipa kickstarted the 2024 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles with a high-energy performance of “Training Season” and “Houdini,” the lead singles from her much-anticipated third album. Following her show-stopping set, she made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on February 8, where she opened up about her intense songwriting process.
A Book Full of Songs—And Plenty of Revisions
When Kimmel asked about her songwriting journey, Lipa proudly displayed her treasured book, containing every track she penned for the album. “It’s got every single song I wrote,” she shared. “I wrote 97 songs.” Were they all masterpieces? Not quite. With a candid laugh, she admitted, “Lots of them are terrible—about 80.” But perfection requires trial and error, and Lipa was determined to refine her sound.
Since the release of Future Nostalgia in 2020—a critically acclaimed album that peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200—Lipa has grown significantly as an artist. “The second I write a song, I know if it’s good or not, or if it’s close,” she explained. This time around, she took a meticulous approach, rewriting and fine-tuning each song until it met her exacting standards. “I didn’t really have the confidence to do that on my previous records.”
A Newfound Confidence in Her Craft
In the early days of her career, Lipa admitted that what she wrote in the studio was often what made the final cut. Now, she’s more assertive in her artistic vision. “I’m much more confident in myself as a songwriter and performer,” she stated. “I went in, dug a little deeper, and changed things until they felt perfect to me. And I feel proud of it.”
Her conversation with Kimmel wasn’t all about music. The singer also fangirled over Katy Perry, tested her host’s skills with Albanian expressions, and shared how she’s been keeping notebooks filled with ideas, plans, and dreams since childhood.
The Mystery Continues
While Lipa was eager to discuss her creative process, she remained tight-lipped about key details. The album’s title, tracklist, and release date? Still a secret. “Because I want to keep it a secret for a little bit longer,” she teased. “I can’t reveal my secrets.”
This upcoming album follows the massive success of Future Nostalgia, which dominated the U.K. Albums Chart for four weeks, won Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2021 Grammys, and spawned the smash hit “Levitating,” Billboard’s No. 1 song of 2021.
With her newfound confidence, tireless work ethic, and refined artistry, Dua Lipa is poised to deliver her most polished album yet. And if “Training Season” and “Houdini” are any indication, fans are in for something truly special.
