Fans of both Normani and Jazmine Sullivan were buzzing over the weekend after Normani seemingly confirmed a long-standing rumor: she recorded a demo of Sullivan's Grammy-nominated 2020 hit, “Pick Up Your Feelings.” The revelation came when the former Fifth Harmony member responded to a fan's tweet with the comment, “now how did ya’ll get this,” which appeared to acknowledge the existence of her demo.
The tweet in question came from a fan who wrote, “Normani ate on ‘Pick Up Your Feelings,’ but glad it went to Jazmine. Mani knows what she wants & her album will be great!” The post also included a snippet of Normani’s demo version, which slowly faded into Sullivan’s released track, further fueling excitement among fans.
Originally released as the second single from Sullivan's acclaimed EP Heaux Tales, “Pick Up Your Feelings” became a standout hit. Written by Sullivan along with Audra Mae, Kyle Coleman, Michael Holmes, Brittany Coney, and Denisa Andrews (of production duo Nova Wav), the song earned multiple Grammy nominations, including Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance. It ultimately won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance in a rare tie with Silk Sonic’s “Leave the Door Open.” The song reached No. 75 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Adult R&B chart, marking Sullivan's first No. 1 hit on that chart.
At the time of writing, spokespeople for both Normani and Sullivan had not responded to requests for further comment. However, the excitement surrounding the news is palpable, with fans speculating on how Normani’s version might have sounded had it been released.
The news of Normani’s demo comes amidst anticipation for her long-awaited solo debut album. Since breaking out with her 2019 single “Motivation,” Normani has released a few other tracks, including “Wild Side” featuring Cardi B in 2021 and “Fair” in March 2022. She was also featured on Megan Thee Stallion's "Diamonds" and on Calvin Harris' "New to You."
Normani's solo debut album has been highly anticipated, but no official release date has been set. Fans are hopeful that this new revelation may hint at more exciting music to come soon.
