In a heartfelt and emotional tribute, Quavo honors his late nephew and fellow Migos member, Takeoff, with his new solo track "Without You." The deeply moving song, released on January 4, 2023, encapsulates Quavo's grief and cherished memories with Takeoff, who tragically lost his life in a shooting incident in Houston on November 1, 2022.
The accompanying music video presents Quavo in a somber setting, sitting in a leather chair in the studio with his eyes closed, reflecting on the moments he shared with Takeoff. With a blunt in hand, Quavo reminisces about their unforgettable times together, while expressing his longing for a time machine to relive those cherished experiences. The song’s stripped-down beat amplifies the raw emotion in his voice as he raps, “Tears rollin’ down my eyes/ Can’t tell you how many times I cried/ Days ain’t the same without you/ I don’t know if I’m the same without you.”
Throughout the track, Quavo takes listeners on a journey through the past, recalling significant milestones they reached together. He references performing at Coachella, struggling during their early days on the Northside, and smoking big blunts as they navigated life. The lyrics “I wish I had a time machine/ Just so you can take a ride with me” underscore Quavo's deep longing for Takeoff’s presence.
Produced by Zaytoven and Mike Dean, "Without You" also features an intro by singer Vory. The song carries a celestial theme, with Quavo envisioning Takeoff in the afterlife, waiting to reunite. He croons, “Out in the galaxy, up in the stars/ Over the universe, it’s bigger than Mars/ See you in heaven, see you in heaven/ When I see you in heaven, I’mma be with my dawg.” The track concludes with an inconsolable Quavo uttering, “Taaaake… I’m sorry,” capturing the weight of his sorrow.
Takeoff’s untimely death at 28 sent shockwaves through the hip-hop community. Houston police identified him as an “innocent bystander” during an altercation at a bowling alley, which stemmed from a dice game. Two men, Patrick Xavier Clark and Cameron Joshua, have since been arrested in connection with the shooting.
Since Takeoff’s passing, both Quavo and Offset have remained relatively silent, choosing to mourn privately. However, they paid tribute during a public memorial on November 11, 2022, at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena.
"Without You" stands as one of the most personal releases from Quavo, serving as an emotional outlet for his grief while allowing fans to mourn alongside him. The song not only pays homage to Takeoff's legacy but also highlights the unbreakable bond the two shared as family and collaborators.
